NTPC is expected to recruit candidates separately for RRB Station Master through a dedicated Centralised Employment Notification. The official notification and application dates are not revealed yet. But reports say they will soon release in the third week of October 2026.
The graduate CEN 06/2026 opened on 8 October 2026 for 3,548 posts, and Station Master isn’t among them. A year ago the same notification carried 615 Station Master vacancies. But that’s changed now and the post has its own recruitment. If you are also targeting RRB Station Master post then the preparation plan is going to change more than the dates.
What Changed For RRB Station Master Recruitment in 2026
The Railway Board gave the guidelines on 7 October that Station Master recruitment will run through a separate Centralised Employment Notice. The old setup is gone where candidates have to prepare NTPC’s two computer-based tests.
Until now, CBT 1 carries 100 marks and CBT 2 carries 120 marks for the duration of 90 minutes. And now one CBT of 100 marks is given 120 minutes of time. In simple, there is only a single paper (CBT) which carries the total weight.
The syllabus also changed General Awareness which was most important section of the paper is replace with Basic Science, a standalone Data Analysis and Interpretation block worth 30 marks. English-language comprehension in a railway exam is new, reading comprehension tucked inside the logic section, and it’s the detail most aspirants will underestimate.
The merit formula survived with one tweak. Earlier, final merit was 70% CBT 2 and 30% aptitude test. Now it’s 70% of the single CBT and 30% of the aptitude test.
RRB Station Master Notification Date And Vacancies
The RRB Station Master Notification and vacancies have not been announced yet. But it will be released at the end of October and vacancy is expected to be around 500+ which is still unconfirmed by the officials.
The Railway Board issued guidelines on 7 October 2026 for separate Station Master recruitment, applications opening in November 2026, and the exam in January 2027.
The NTPC graduate cycle listed 994 Station Master posts in 2024 and 615 in 2025. The numbers have been falling, so a figure near 500 would fit the trend, but it is a trend, not a notification.
RRB Station Master Eligibility
Qualification: a graduation degree from a recognised university or an equivalent qualification.
Age: the guidelines mention 20 to 33 years in the normal course, which includes a three-year relaxation referred to in the Board’s instructions. The cut-off date for counting age and the category-wise relaxations for SC, ST, OBC, ex-servicemen and others will be fixed in the CEN. Don’t calculate your eligibility from the 33 figure alone.
Medical: A-2 standard. This is the vision and fitness category prescribed for the post, with details governed by railway medical rules. If your eyesight is borderline, find out what A-2 requires now, not after you’ve cleared the CBT.
RRB Station Master Selection Process
Four stages, in this order: single-stage CBT, Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), document verification, medical examination.
Stage 1: CBT. One paper, 100 questions, 100 marks, 120 minutes. The CBT decides who gets to the aptitude test. Candidates are shortlisted for the CBAT at eight times the RRB-wise vacancies, in order of CBT merit. If an RRB has 50 vacancies, roughly 400 candidates sit the CBAT. That ratio is the reason cut-offs will be tight.
Stage 2: CBAT. The aptitude test is where Station Master hopefuls tend to come undone, because it can’t be crammed the way a question bank can. The Board letter doesn’t spell out the CBAT format yet, so check the CEN for the test structure and the minimum qualifying score. In the 2025 cycle, the qualifying benchmark was a T-score of 42, but don’t assume the same bar this year.
Stage 3: DV and medical. Only candidates who clear the CBAT enter final merit. Combined merit is 70% CBT and 30% CBAT, and DV and medical shortlisting happens RRB-wise at a 1:1 ratio against vacancies. Put plainly, if you’re in the 1:1 list and your documents and medical hold up, you’re in.
One consequence worth planning around: a high CBT score will not save a poor CBAT, and a good CBAT will not rescue a CBT that misses the 1:8 cut. Both gates are real.
RRB Station Master Exam Pattern 2026
The CBT is structured in three blocks that add up to 100 questions, one mark each.
| Section | Questions | Marks |
| Basic Science, Mathematics and Analytical Capability | 60 | 60 |
| Logical Capability | 20 | 20 |
| Mental Reasoning | 20 | 20 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
The 60-mark first block splits internally: 30 marks for Basic Science and Mathematics, 30 for Data Analysis and Interpretation. The whole paper runs on a single 120-minute clock, so there’s no sectional timing mentioned. That means you choose where your minutes go.
Negative marking hasn’t been specified in the guidelines yet. Earlier railway CBTs deducted one-third of a mark per wrong answer, but past practice isn’t a notification. Wait for the CEN before settling your guessing strategy.
Two minutes per question looks generous until you meet a 4-chart data set.
RRB Station Master Syllabus 2026
Basic Science and Mathematics (30 marks)
This block is half arithmetic and half school-level physics.
The math side covers the basic arithmetic problems from number system, ratio and proportion, averages, and percentages. Once you prepare these then the next level includes profit, loss, discount, time, speed and distance. You should prepare these easy topics first then step onto difficult level topics such as algebra, linear equations, arithmetic progression, LCM and HCF, geometry and trigonometry, and if you have time prepare other chapters too: power and work, area and volume, probability, and basic statistics.
Science also carries basic topics which you have studied till 8th class. The common topics like units and measurements, mass and weight, density, work, power and energy. Candidates who have already taken science stream, this is not difficult at all. But commerce and arts graduates can also learn with a little preparation, questions from kinetic energy, friction, speed, velocity and relative velocity, heat and temperature, basic electricity, levers and simple machines also come in the paper but on a very basic level.
None of it goes beyond what a Class 9 or 10 NCERT science book teaches. But if you haven’t opened that book in years, budget real time for it, because these are marks that earlier cycles never tested in a dedicated block.
Data Analysis and Interpretation (30 marks)
This is the single biggest block and the one that separates this exam from its predecessor. The syllabus lists multi-source data analysis, drawing inference from text, tabular data, graphs and charts, scatter plots, pie charts, statistical curve distributions, Venn diagrams, data sufficiency and data arrangement.
Thirty marks means 30 questions, and these usually arrive in sets, with one table or chart feeding four or five questions. Slow readers lose the most here. Extracting a number from a chart in ten seconds instead of forty is a skill you only build by repetition.
Logical Capability (20 marks)
Binary logic, syllogism, clocks and calendars, assumptions, blood relations and family trees, and logic-based puzzles. Reading comprehension also sits in this section, and it’s the new element. Passages may be drawn from history, society, literature, science, environment, mythology, technology or culture, so there’s no single subject to revise. You prepare for it by reading, not memorising.
Mental Reasoning (20 marks)
Analogy, series completion, coding-decoding, ranking problems and arrangement-based problems. This is the most familiar section for anyone who has attempted a railway or SSC exam, and it’s where you should be collecting marks quickly to bank time for data interpretation.
RRB Station Master Salary and Job Profile
The post sits at Level 6 of the 7th Pay Commission matrix, with a basic pay of ₹35,400 per month, according to published reports. Allowances such as dearness allowance and house rent allowance come on top, and the actual in-hand figure depends on your posting city. I haven’t seen the Board’s own pay breakdown for this cycle, so quote basic pay only and verify the rest in the CEN.
How to Prepare For The RRB Station Master CBT
Start with data interpretation, even if it feels like the wrong order. It’s the heaviest block, the least familiar to railway aspirants, and the one where speed compounds. A workable routine is two data sets a day, timed, from the first week, with one passage of reading comprehension from a newspaper editorial alongside.
After that, stack the rest around your weakest area. If you’re a science graduate, spend the time on reading comprehension and charts. If you come from a commerce or arts background, put the Class 9 and 10 physics topics on your calendar this month, because they’re a fixed 30-mark block shared with maths.
And since the old NTPC question banks tested general awareness heavily, don’t buy a prep book on the strength of “Station Master” on the cover. Check that its syllabus lists data interpretation and basic science. If it doesn’t, it’s built for the previous pattern.
