The RRB NTPC is a competitive exam for candidates recruitment in various roles. The goal of this examination is to fill 11,558 vacancies in non-technical sectors. Stages of selection

To recruit the most qualified candidates they structured the process in multiple stages for various non-technical posts. The First stage includes a Computer Based Test, a common screening round for all applicants. This stage covers the topics of General Awareness, Mathematics, and General Intelligence & Reasoning. Candidates must clear the CBT-1 to get their name in the shortlist for the next round.

Second Stage following up the more advanced topics in the subjects to ensure the ability of the candidate. Candidates must clear this second stage with a higher level of difficulty of the questions and more questions. Those who clear this stage are eligible for subsequent skill-based assessments.

The Next stage requires the skill test of the candidates for which they were applied. Some Job posts are required to pass the typing skill test to clear the stage they must score better in this stage. The Typing Skill Test is mandatory for clerical posts, evaluating candidates’ typing proficiency. Posts like Station Master and Traffic Assistant have to take aptitude tests for operational roles.

The Last stage is for the shortlisted candidates who passed the above stage and now time to proceed with the document Verification and then the Medical examination to ensure the candidates are perfectly fine to join the organization or department. Only those who qualify in all these stages are considered for final appointment.

Negative marking: The candidate should be aware of negative markings for the question. 1/3 mark is deducted for every wrong answer. While the correct answer gets you 1 mark. Negative marking applies to both CBTs. 

Language: This exam is available in multiple languages. Candidates can choose a regional language from different regions can also attempt this exam. The primary languages include English and Hindi. For the Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), the question paper is provided only in English and Hindi.

General Awareness

General Awareness means how much you observe the changes and updates around yourself. It must be national or international but have high value for government jobs. Who Is an RRB Section Controller?

A Section Controller job is to handle the schedule of running trains. They are the ones who decide which train gets priority at a junction and which one has to wait on a line. Educational qualification: You need a graduate degree from a recognised university, and the discipline does not matter. No matter if you are from commerce, arts, science, or engineering, you are eligible as long as the degree is completed. Aspirants awaiting their final year results cannot apply this cycle, so if your degree is ongoing, this will not be your chance now. 

Age limit: The age of the candidates should be between 20 and 33 years (as on 1st January, 2026), standard age relaxation shall be applicable for reserved categories as per government rules. If you are near either limit, it is worth verifying the exact cutoff date once the detailed notification is out, since a few weeks can make/break eligibility. 

Medical standard: candidates must meet the A2 medical standard to hold this position as it requires sustained attention and quick decision-making which includes specific vision and hearing benchmarks. This is more strict than a lot of other railway positions so it is worth getting a basic medical check up early on rather than be surprised later on in the process. 

Nationality: Applicants should be Indian nationals or subjects of Nepal or Bhutan, Tibetan refugees who came to India before 1962.

Selection Process for RRB Section Controller

To become an RRB Section Controller, involves clearing four distinct stages. Each stage evaluates different skills and reduces the number of applicants.

It begins with a Computer-Based Test (CBT) that tests candidates on general awareness, reasoning, mathematics and general science and also the subject knowledge related to railway operations. 

The aspirants who qualify the CBT are eligible to appear for Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), a stage exclusive for posts of safety and control. This is not a test of theoretical knowledge, rather an examination of your ability to make decisions, maintain situational awareness and stay calm under pressure – all important attributes for a Section Controller. 

Candidates who clear both rounds are called for Document Verification in which original certificates, proofs of category, and date of birth are verified with respect to the application. 

The last step is a Medical Examination to ascertain the level of A2 fitness. Only those candidates who successfully clear all the stages are considered for the final merit list and merit is decided based on the aggregate performance in the CBT and fulfilling all the eligibility criteria at each stage.

Work Responsibility of a Section Controller

On a daily basis, a Section Controller keeps track of trains running in their section with control charts and communication devices and remains in continuous communication with station masters, loco pilots, and other controllers on the route.

Salary

The RRB ALP salary 2026 is structured to offer competitive pay. The starting salary of the candidates selected for the post of Assistant Loco Pilots are entitled to Rs 19,900 to Rs 35,000 per month as per the 7th Pay Commission salary.

The salary is made up of the basic pay and several allowances. These allowances include the following – Dearness Allowance, Night Duty Allowance, Special Allowance.

The total salary is likely to further increase with the course of time as there are promotions. When the aspirants grow in their careers, then also increments come, taking their earnings to some more sums. 

Selection Process

The selection for RRB ALP 2026 consists of multiple stages intended to test the ability of the candidates. The process normally consists of:

  • Computer Based Test (CBT) Stage I: This first qualifying examination is of 75 marks and covers various subjects.
  • Computer-Based Test (CBT) Stage II: Those who qualify in the first stage will go to the second stage, which is even more detailed.
  • Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT): Candidates also are required to appear for the CBAT on their application for certain positions within the Loco Pilot organization to measure their suitability for the job.
